Companies considering the introduction of 3D printing or looking to make its practical use more efficient met with researchers and experts in additive technologies at the SUPPORT4SME project workshop. The program offered a clear introduction to FDM 3D printing, an overview of materials and software, as well as practical demonstrations that helped participants better understand the possibilities of this technology in everyday industrial applications.
The workshop opened with an introduction to the SUPPORT4SME project itself, which connects companies with researchers and experts across disciplines. Company representatives learned about opportunities for cooperation, available infrastructure, and a platform that helps identify specific technological solutions for real industrial problems.
The main part of the program focused on FDM 3D printers, i.e. Fused Deposition Modeling technology, which is among the most widespread forms of 3D printing in industrial practice. The principle is simple: an object is created by gradually depositing melted filament layer by layer according to a digital model. It is precisely this simplicity and flexibility that makes FDM printing an accessible tool not only for development departments, but also for smaller companies.
Participants were introduced to the most commonly used materials, such as PLA, PETG, and ABS, their properties, and their typical applications. The discussion also covered practical issues that determine the quality of the final print — proper printer setup, calibration, choice of temperatures, print speed, and layer height.
Software was an equally important part of the workshop. Participants went through the process of preparing a 3D model for printing using a slicer, which converts the digital model into instructions the printer can understand. This is where details such as the thickness of the object’s outer shell, infill density, and print time optimization are determined.
One of the reasons people attended the workshop was that they are introducing 3D printing production and wanted to consult on the basics. “We know about the technology in general, but there are always many details that one does not fully understand. These small details were very valuable for us,” one participant said in his evaluation of the workshop. As he added, in their case it is a technology with great potential for the future.
“Our group, which focuses on unmanned systems, has only recently been established. We are building our own laboratories, and 3D printing is currently one of our key technologies. We are now gradually learning how to work with it,” he added. The practical aspect of the workshop was also appreciated by another respondent from an industrial company who has been working with 3D printing for a long time. “I refreshed what I already knew, but some parts were genuinely interesting. Especially the demonstrations at the laboratory equipment. You do not often get access to 3D printers like these.” He uses 3D printing in his work every day. “I have two printers at home and one at work, mainly for producing fixtures used to hold parts on machines. Thanks to this, we save both time and money — instead of machining, which would make the part more expensive, the part is simply printed,” he added.
Another respondent had also already encountered 3D printing: “I already know many of these basic things, but I learned about some new, non-standard materials. I was most interested in the 3D printer from Prusa Research that was demonstrated here. I am more used to Bambu Lab,” said another participant, adding that they are considering purchasing their own printer at work. The workshop thus offered not only a theoretical overview, but above all practical insight into how 3D printing can be used effectively in everyday business practice. And if anyone had doubts about whether this is a technology of the future, the full classroom and lively cross-disciplinary discussions provided a clear answer.
